New Scottish Legislation for Fire Alarms. Is your Home protected?

The changes apply to all homeowners and landlords in Scotland. An Interlinked Fire and Smoke alarm system must be fitted in a property, alongside adequate Carbon Monoxide protection.

Why the legislation is necessary:

Lack of protection
One in three households in the UK do not have a working fire alarm and do not meet the government standards. This is extremely dangerous as it reduces the opportunity to stop a fire in its early stage.
Technological upgrade
Over 10,000 fires are caused by faulty or missing detectors every year. Old fire systems are obsolete and difficult to maintain. New standards are necessary to upgrade existing systems.
Drastic action required
Following the Greenfell Tower tragic incident, drastic measures were introduced in 2019. The renewed framework ensures that everyone in Scotland has the same level of protection whether they own or rent their home, to avoid potential fires in the future.
Protect tenants
The new legislation will force negligent landlords to be compliant and meet the highest standards applied in the Private Rented Sector PRS, which should be already applied.

how to meet the New safety standards

To avoid potential confusion in meeting the new legislation standards, here is a visual example of which alarms are required to meet the new safety standards and achieve the highest level of protection for your home.
The regulations allow for interconnected alarms to be either hardwired or tamper proof long-life battery powered. For ease of installation and additional cost, wireless alarms are recommended.
Minimum protection required
Landlords and homeowners are required to meet the minimum standards to be compliant with the regulations. However, it is strongly recommended to get the highest level of protection to create a safe living environment.
Hallways and Landings: Smoke Alarms
Living Room: Smoke Alarm
Kitchen: Heat Alarm
Room with Boiler: Carbon Monoxide Detector
Highest protection recommended
To meet the highest protection advised by British Standard BS5839-6:2019, Smoke Alarms should be also installed in the dining area and each bedroom. This will help detecting alarms that are closer to the fire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an electrician to install FireGuard+ alarms?

We made it easy, you will not need to call an electrician to install our fire alarm system. Our alarms are wirelessly interconnected and long-life battery powered. You can either use screws and anchors, or strong adhesive pads to fit your alarms in minutes.

How many fire alarms do I need in my home?

The minimum protection standards requires one smoke alarm installed in the room most frequently used for general daytime living purposes; one smoke alarm in every circulation space on each storey, such as hallways and landings; one heat alarm in every kitchen; one carbon monoxide detector where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance, such as boilers.

Do FireGuard+ alarms detect Smoke and Heat at the same time?

FireSense 10W Interlinked Alarms include a Photoelectric (for smoke detection) and a Thermistor (for heat detection) sensors within the same unit, but do not detect both at the same time. This is necessary to avoid false alarm when heat detection is required over smoke detection in areas such as kitchen and garage.

You can easily switch from smoke to heat detection at any time, depending on the location of your fire alarm. Click here to learn more.

Can I link other alarms with Fireguard+ Alarms?

If you require additional units, you can find compatible alarms via third party resellers available at this link. These units are compatible with your existing FireGuard+ Alarms.

Troubleshooting

The remote controller doesn't work
If the remove controller doesn't operate with the alarms, or if it doesn't have any active light when pressing the buttons, it means that the battery needs replaced.

My alarms are beeping every 60 seconds.
If one of your units is beeping every 60 seconds, the sensor might be indicating low battery levels. To reset the sensor please turn the unit OFF and then back ON. To turn the alarm off, simply press and hold until you hear 2 beeps. To turn it back ON, press and hold until you hear a single beep. If the problem persists, please get in touch via our contact page with your order number.

My alarms are being triggered unexpectedly.
There might be an issue with one of the alarm units becoming miscalibrated as a result of dust, accidental damage, or environmental temperature fluctuations. This results in one alarm triggering the other units. To identify the problematic unit, please follow these steps:

1. Turn OFF all the alarms.
2. Turn one of the alarms ON. If the unit unexpectedly triggers within the same period of time as previous occurrence then it's the alarm that requires attention. If it doesn't trigger it's operating as normal.
3. Repeat the previous step with the other units one by one until you identify the issue.
4. When you identify the unit that is causing issues, please get in touch with your order number and the specific details via our contact page.

Guarantee

At FireGuardPlus, we guarantee our alarms for three years. If you're experiencing issues within that timeframe, we promise to repair or replace the units at no extra cost. However, if your alarms are older than three years, you will find compatible models available from third-party sellers. They pair easily with your existing alarms. For assistance, reach out to us anytime.
